Workshop overview
This workshop offers a rare chance to explore in a small, safe group how you may be hearing, responding to and meeting the often profound and sometimes hidden spiritual and existential needs, questions and challenges of clients - while also actively supporting your own spiritual development.
This very full day of teaching and experience will let you see how responding openly to clients' spiritual issues can deepen your understanding of their social and psychological complexity - and your own. Together we will explore:
- How you might more effectively accept and understand clients' most painful or perplexing spiritual issues when their origin or context is unfamiliar or challenges your own beliefs;
- How better to understand the influences and effects of your own religious formation (or its absence);
- How we might reconsider "wholeness", the "other", "self", "boundaries", "belonging" and other critical psychological concepts in the context of spiritual enquiry;
- What your conceptions are of the terms "spiritual", "ethical" and "religious";
- How your assumptions affect what you unconsciously or consciously encourage and discourage in your interactions with others; What restricts your spiritual evolution or supports it;
- What changes in consciousness, attitudes or behaviour might allow you more effectively to accept and support others.
The Spiritual Evolution workshop is particularly suitable for people currently working as therapists, counsellors, doctors, nurses, ministers and chaplains, or in teaching or leadership positions in community groups, schools or tertiary institutions. It will include teaching from Dr Stephanie Dowrick, guided reflection on your personal and professional experiences, and focused, confidential analysis and discussion, all led by Dr Dowrick.
